News & Blog

Joelle Reid, new Artist Liaison at Toi Ora

From coming to Toi Ora with her Dad as a child, to joining the team. Meet our new Artist Liaison Joelle Reid.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
I’m mainly a painter and illustrator, but I love trying out different art forms. I’ve worked in mental health the past few years, and before that, I was at an art supplies store- so I’m just as happy making art as I am organising paint shelves!

What drew you to Toi Ora and this role as Artist Liaison?
My dad used to come to Toi Ora to play guitar, and I’d hang out and use the art space. It really helped spark my creativity back then, so it’s special to be part of it now.

What are you most excited about working at Toi Ora?
Being inspired by other artists and their creativity.

What’s your first impression of the role so far?
Toi Ora has a great vibe. It’s the people that make it so special.
He aha te mea nui o te ao
What is the most important thing in the world?
He tangata, he tangata, he tangata
It is the people, it is the people, it is the people

Do you practice any art or creativity yourself?
Yes, I’m a jack of all trades- I do pottery, play instruments and sing, painting, drawing, jewelry making etc. I love trying new things.

Who’s your favourite artist?
Salvador Dali – the guy who does the melting clocks!

What do you hope to achieve in the role of Artist Liaison?
I hope to support artists to try new things with their art and have good laughs.
