Classes
Toi Ora offers over 20 visual and performing arts classes free of cost, taught by professional tutors. Our classes are a space for people to engage with the science-backed steps in the creative process that are proven to build wellbeing. It’s a safe and supportive environment to be yourself, where you are at today.
Open Studio
Open Studio time is available to independently work on projects in the designated studio area for anyone who has taken at least one class at Toi Ora. Open Studio is available 9am-3pm Monday-Thursday and 9am-12pm on Fridays. Please book your space in advance: info@toiora.org.nz
Acoustic Guitar & Music
Introduction to learning basic guitar chords and playing, as well as to develop
your singing and music skills. Learn on your own guitar or use one from the class set of guitars.
Draw & Paint with a Twist (Intermediate)
Intermediate class for those looking to extend their drawing and painting skills.
Practice with different media and techniques. Materials provided.
Face & Figure Drawing
Draw a clothed, live model where possible. Develop your style & technique. Learn about the human form through renowned artists. Materials provided.
Let's get Creative
Get inspired by a range of materials and art forms, including drawing, painting,
collage, printmaking and found materials. All levels welcome. Materials provided.
Mosaics
Have fun creating your own mosaic with coloured glass and ceramic tile. Basic
colour and design ideas are included. All work is grouted. Materials provided.
Movement & Dance
Explore movements and dance in a gentle and fun way.
Multimedia
Learn a range of software for editing videos and photos for social media, desktop publishing and web design. Help with entire Creative Cloud.
Music Recording
Record your own music with the support of an experienced engineer.
Paint the Sky (Beginning)
Explore your artistic ideas in a supportive environment. This is a beginner’s class,
focussed on drawing and painting. Materials provided.
Painting (Beginning & Intermediate)
Introduction to a variety of painters and exploring your own style. Materials provided.
Painting Now (Advanced)
This is an intermediate to advanced painting class designed to encourage you to develop your own practice and research. The class culminates in a stunning contemporary and fine art exhibition at the Toi Ora Gallery. Materials provided.
Performance & Acting
Screen and theatre acting, theatre sports, script & character analysis, workshops, and public speaking.
Photography
Gain foundational knowledge of digital photography, and Adobe Lightroom
Classic. Access to class set of equipment. All skill levels welcome.
Poetry, Writing & Performance
A place to read your writing aloud. Diverse, optional weekly exercises provided prior to each session. Tailored feedback given in class. Available online or in-person at Toi Ora.
Printmaking
Develop your own designs and images by exploring a range of techniques, such as wood and lino cuts, etching and monoprints. Materials provided.
Screen Printing
Learn the ancient art of silk-screen printing on textiles. This class will teach you how to turn a drawing or idea into a material design that can be printed with textile ink on clothing or fabric. Materials provided.
Singing & Music
Come sing for the joy of it! Learn simple techniques, experience uplifting songs and fun classes.
Toi Hono
A fun way to explore Māori Craft & Culture through art in a safe, supportive, and Tau (calm) space. This class is open to anyone who has an interest in Te Ao Māori (Māori world view). Materials provided.
