Toi Ora Artist
Loukas has been at Toi Ora for the last 7-8months and comes with a background in Fashion Design. Although he doesn’t consider himself a “creative”, he definitely feels at home in the Toi Ora studio. “I’ve always been into photography, so I became the de facto family photographer, along with working on my own projects along the way. I love people watching, capturing candid moments and am mostly drawn to portrait and still life photos”.
Loukas shares: “The first semester of my fashion degree was very arts focused, which I’m grateful for. We had drawing classes which I enjoyed a lot. We also had contextual art lectures which taught me about specific artists, art styles and movements.”
I take inspiration from a lot of things pop culture, gender and sexuality, mythology, nature. I’m a really big fan of expressionism and how it conveys emotions and the human experience.
I’m also attracted to things that are considered dark, ugly or weird. Recently I’ve been getting into abject art and loving anything macabre.
Toi Ora is a really great resource for mental wellbeing, so make the most of it. There’s a great sense of community and support from your tutors and peers alike. You can find yourself and express your creativity.
for beginners: If you’re a perfectionist or overthinker like me, try not to have any expectations at first. Don’t think, just do. Enjoy yourself and the process. Get to know your tutors, be open to feedback and try to apply it to your work. Follow your gut, it’s called your second brain for a reason.
Loukas shared the wonderful idea to remodel our “artist spotlights” as “Humans of Toi Ora”, thank you Loukas! So it’s a pleasure to have you as the first one to feature.
